WP Gives a Hand: A small action, a big impact
It’s that time of the year again – getting close to our annual charity initiative: WordPress Gives a Hand as a way of giving back to the ones in need. WP Gives a Hand returns every December as a reminder that our ecosystem is strongest when we stand together and give back.
“If you want happiness for a lifetime, help somebody.” – Chinese Proverb
For anyone hearing about it for the first time, here’s the simplest way to understand the initiative:
It’s a community-wide charity movement where WordPress businesses donate a portion of their revenue to support causes that matter.
And for those of us who’ve been part of it for years – it’s a tradition we proudly continue, joining forces around the goal of helping people and causes in need.
WP Gives a Hand origin story
It all started back in 2020 with an idea and open hearts who wanted to do something good in a time of struggle. People within our company, together with friends across the WordPress ecosystem, wanted to make a change and do something meaningfully useful that goes beyond sending thoughts and prayers. And it was then and there that a decision was made: instead of offering Christmas discounts, they would donate a percentage of their revenue to charity.
It wasn’t just about raising money. It was about shifting the conversation toward compassion, responsibility and using our work to create real-world impact. That idea quickly turned into a movement in which other companies joined. The initiative got a name, a structure and a shared mission and that is how #WPGivesAHand was born – a WordPress-wide movement where businesses join together to help those in need, during the miraculous season of love and giving back.
How does it work?
The concept never changed – because simplicity is what makes it powerful.
Here’s how it works, every year:
Basically, each year around Christmas, participating companies, agencies, freelancers, creators, theme and plugin developers donate a portion of every sale to a charity of their choice. Upon agreeing to participate and filling out the form, each participant publicly shares the charity they support, spreading awareness not just about the initiative, but also about the organizations doing meaningful work. Each of them prepare a blog post, social media posts, newsletters about the campaign and feature all partners involved in the movement, using #WPGivesAHand hashtag to help spread awareness and the word further. After the week ends, each business completes the donation and shares the final results with the community.
This year, WPGivesAHand runs from December 22nd to December 28th and, true to the initiative, everyone is welcome to participate to collectively make a positive impact.
Why giving matters – and why this initiative works
WP Gives a Hand isn’t just about a week of donations – it’s about building a culture of contribution inside the WordPress ecosystem. When one company gives, another sees it and joins. When a user buys from a participating business, it encourages others to do the same. And when the community shares the campaign, it broadens the impact. Because, good actions create momentum that changes people’s lives for the better. Something we all behind this initiative are about.
Just like once Plato have said:
“Good actions give strength to ourselves and inspire good actions in others.”
